Nashville Breast Reduction

With the help of breast reduction in Nashville, overly large or pendulous breasts can be made smaller in order to resolve a number of issues.

For some women, oversized breasts can create chronic problems like back and neck pain, bra strap marks in their shoulders, and sometimes even changes in the shape of their upper spines.

Women whose breasts are overly large can find it difficult to find clothes that fit properly and frequently suffer from embarrassment or low self-esteem.

Dr. Alton Ingram regularly performs breast reduction surgery to address physical symptoms and restore a better quality of life.

What is a Breast Reduction

A breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure designed to reduce the size of a woman’s breasts by removing excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue.

Unlike a breast lift, breast reduction always requires fairly extensive incisions in order to remove not only loose skin but also excess breast tissue deep under the skin.

In a breast reduction operation, Dr. Ingram will make an incision around your nipple in order to remove the excess skin there and to allow him to elevate your nipple.

In almost all breast reduction operations, Dr. Ingram will also place a vertical incision under your areola and a horizontal incision in your lower breast fold to remove additional skin and breast tissue. This is necessary when giving your breast an attractive lower contour.

The main goal of the breast reduction operation is to reduce the size and weight of your breast while raising your nipple and increasing your skin’s firmness.

Preparing For Your Breast Reduction

Before a date can be set for your breast reduction surgery, you will need to meet with Dr. Alton Ingram for a consultation. As part of this consultation, you will tell Dr. Ingram about your aesthetic goals for the procedure. He will walk you through the details of the surgery, including preparation and recovery.

The two of you will go over your complete medical history, including any medications or supplements you are currently taking, any past procedures, and any allergies you may have. He will also perform a physical examination. Once you are cleared for the surgery, Dr. Ingram will create a surgical plan and set a date for the procedure.

In the time before the surgery, patients must avoid NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like aspirin, since they can result in bleeding issues during surgery. It will also be necessary to quit smoking, since smoking damages skin health and can lead to complications in the healing process.

The Day of Surgery

Dr. Ingram almost always performs breast reduction operations in his accredited outpatient surgery center in the Green Hills area of Nashville. Your surgery will take about three hours to complete, but from the time you get to the surgery center until you’re ready to go home, it will be more like four to five hours.

When you arrive, our anesthesia and nursing staff will perform an independent evaluation of your medical condition, in addition to the assessment Dr. Ingram has already made during your prior consultations and preoperative visits.

Then Dr. Ingram will perform one final physical examination, and after we know that your surgery is going to be as safe as possible, you and Dr. Ingram will talk for one final time about your cosmetic goals. Only then will Dr. Ingram get you ready for surgery by marking the surgical incisions and discussing what you should expect during and after your surgery.

Recovery After the Procedure

You will go home the day of surgery and will need someone available to drive you. Your breasts will be swollen and tender for a time. Dr. Alton Ingram hardly ever finds the need to use drainage tubes during breast reduction surgery, so you will not need to care for any drains.

Your breasts will be covered in gauze dressing, and you will need to wear a comfortable and snugly-fitting sports bra that snaps in the front and has no underwire. This compression will limit your bruising and swelling after surgery, and you’ll need to wear it 24/7 for about two weeks.

You’ll also need to restrict some physical activities for 2-4 weeks while you heal – you’ll especially want to limit raising your elbows above your shoulders, especially while lifting heavy things.

Although you’ll see immediate results, it will take a couple of months for your swelling to go down completely and a few months more for any post-surgical marks to fully fade.

Breast Reduction Cost

The cost of a breast reduction varies depending on a number of factors. The exact techniques used play a role in determining the overall price, as does the type of anesthesia administered. The amount of tissue removed can also affect the final cost of reduction mammoplasty.
