What is a FaceLift?

A Facelift, also called a Rhytidectomy, is a transformative cosmetic procedure that can turn back the clock on aging. Everyone experiences at least a little facial sagging and wrinkling with age, and it only increases as you get older. With a Facelift, you can elevate and tighten your facial skin and tissues.

This popular and innovative cosmetic surgical procedure involves lifting and tightening the skin, muscles, and tissues of the face, resulting in a more youthful appearance. Dr. Alton Ingram specializes in crafting natural-looking Facelifts that bring out the best in every patient’s unique features. From reducing wrinkles and sagging skin to enhancing facial contours, a Facelift can work wonders in restoring your youthful glow.

Facelift surgery results in a more youthful overall appearance with fewer of the features that indicate an older age. Your Facelift at Ingram Cosmetic Surgery can minimize:

  • Jowls
  • A turkey neck
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines
  • Sagging cheeks

You may be interested in getting other facial cosmetic surgeries with your Facelift for a more well-rounded result. Many people choose to get a Neck Lift to complete the final look, and you might also consider Blepharoplasty to lift your eyelids.

Please bear in mind that your Facelift does not halt the aging process. You’ll still see some new wrinkles and sagging as time goes by, however, the results stand out and are long-lasting.

The Different Types of Facelifts

Not all Facelifts are created equal, and Dr. Alton Ingram understands that each patient requires a tailored approach. In this section, we explore the various types of Facelifts available, including the traditional skin lift, the SMAS Facelift – which targets deeper facial tissues, and the Composite Facelift -which combines multiple techniques for superior results. We’ll also delve into innovative skin-tightening techniques to address specific concerns.

SMAS Facelift

A SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) Facelift is an advanced technique that addresses the lower ⅔ of the facial region. The SMAS Dr. Ingram targets the support layers of your facial tissue to achieve beautiful, natural-looking results that can take years off of your appearance and are long-lasting.

This technique utilizes an incision made along your temple and above the hairline that extends along the natural creases of your skin and then curves around your ears to discreetly hide any scar tissue. After the incision is made, Dr. Ingram can lift and reposition the tissue and muscles in the middle and lower portions of your face and neck. He will trim any excess skin and tighten the remaining skin.

Patients can expect some mild bruising, swelling, and discomfort after their SMAS Facelift, and should be able to resume normal activities and their work life within two to three weeks.

Composite Facelift

A Composite Facelift is a very thorough approach to address facial aging from the lower eyelids down to your collarbone. Dr. Ingram will keep your skin attached to the SMAS, which allows fat pads in the face to be moved into a more youthful position. By maneuvering these tissues, there will be excess skin that is generated; Dr. Ingram will trim this extra skin to create a “tension-free” closure, which in turn, leaves better scarring and eliminates a “too tight” appearance.

One of the benefits of a composite facelift is that there is very little blood loss and post-operative pain. The recovery is also very quick, with most patients being able to move about freely the very next day. After a week post-surgery, Dr. Ingram will be able to remove the stitches and you can resume light activity, but you will still need to take it relatively easy. After about two weeks, patients should be able to apply makeup and resume their social life without any evidence of having cosmetic work done.

Mini-Facelift

A slightly modified version of a standard facelift, the Mini-Facelift is designed to help minimize sagging tissue around the lower portion of your face. This procedure is considered to be less invasive than other facial surgeries and requires less excessive skin removal than a normal facelift.

When performing this surgery, Dr. Ingram will make discreet incisions behind your ears that are easily hidden once healed. Using the incision, your skin, and underlying tissues are carefully tightened, with any excess tissue being removed. Your incisions are then closed with a precision suturing technique that reduces tension on your skin and minimizes visible scarring. A mini-facelift will typically take about two hours to complete.

You can expect to experience some mild swelling and bruising, but a much less intense recovery from a typical facelift. Many of our patients see the results from their mini-facelift lasting almost 10 years.

Deep Plane Facelift

A Deep Plane Facelift is considered to be the most invasive facelift technique by many plastic surgeons, however, it can also produce the longest-lasting results. Patients will typically have a more successful flattening of the nasolabial fold (a.k.a. the “Smile lines” or “Laugh lines”) and target the mid-face region, reaching deep tissues and the deeper layers of your facial muscle.

After you’ve been administered Deep I.V. sedation with local anesthesia, Dr. Ingram will mark the locations on your skin where he intends to make the incisions, normally around the hairline and ears. Once these incisions are carefully made, he will use them to tighten and secure the layer of connective tissue and underlying muscle beneath your skin. Strategic ligaments are released at a deeper level which lifts and rejuvenates your skin, and the layer of muscle and tissue is repositioned. Once finished with your procedure, Dr. Ingram will carefully close the incisions.

You can expect a longer recovery time but also longer-lasting results from your standard facelift, with many patients seeing results lasting up to 15 years. During the initial three weeks of your recovery, there will be significant bruising, swelling, and discomfort. You will need to continuously wear a compression garment, drain, and neck support during the first 1 – 2  weeks, or until Dr. Ingram removes them. We strongly recommend avoiding working the first two weeks so you can recover comfortably and avoiding any strenuous activity for six weeks. Although it may appear concerning, it is not uncommon to see ongoing swelling or some bruising lingering for up to a year.

Who are the Best Candidates for a Facelift?

Although any patient looking to have a cosmetic adjustment to their appearance can be a good candidate, the best candidates for a Facelift in Nashville are those patients who have:

  • Double chin
  • Moderate to severe wrinkles
  • Positive opinion of cosmetic surgery
  • Poor jawline definition
  • Realistic expectations
  • Sagging jowls
  • Sagging or loose skin
  • Sunken cheeks

It is important that you come in with realistic expectations, maintain a positive attitude throughout your recovery, and are in overall good health.

Unfortunately, in order to ensure the best results from your Facelift surgery, we can not encourage this procedure if you have a history of drastic weight change, have any pre-existing or current medical conditions, or are currently taking any blood-thinning medications or supplements.

If you have any questions about whether you’re a good candidate or not for this surgery, please discuss them during your Facelift consultation with Dr. Ingram.

First Steps

What’s The First Step?

Embarking on a Facelift journey begins with a thorough initial consultation and evaluation. When you come in for your appointment, Dr. Alton Ingram and his team will take the time to understand your goals and concerns and conduct a comprehensive assessment of your facial anatomy, and you will be asked certain medical and lifestyle questions. It is very important to be open about it, as it will help prevent any unnecessary complications.

If you choose to move forward with your Facelift, Dr. Ingram will design a personalized treatment plan that aligns with your aspirations. This meticulous planning sets the stage for a successful and gratifying Facelift experience. After your plan is made, our Patient Coordinator will help you select your surgical date and time. You will also be provided with some instructions to follow before your procedure that will help make it as safe and successful as possible.

What to Expect on the Day of Facelift Surgery

On the day of your Facelift, you will first meet with Dr. Ingram to review the details of your surgery and make sure that you are comfortable and ready to continue. Our Anesthesiologist will then meet with you and ask you some questions about your medical history before administering your anesthesia.

During a Rhytidectomy, Dr. Ingram makes incisions around your hairline so he can access the underlying fat and tissue. He then repositions and removes the excess skin, fat, and tissue before draping your skin back into its original position. He then trims away extra skin before closing the incision. You’re asleep under anesthesia the entire time.

Facelift Recovery

After undergoing a Facelift, the road to full recovery is essential to ensure optimal results. Dr. Alton Ingram and his team will provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions to aid in the healing process. We’ll guide you through post-operative care, managing discomfort, and the timeline for returning to your daily routine.

Recovery after a Facelift takes about four to six weeks, but you won’t have an accurate idea of your final result until three to four months after your surgery. During the recovery time, you should expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising. Dr. Ingram recommends following these instructions for a swift recovery:

  • Taking about two weeks off work
  • Avoiding strenuous physical activity
  • Resting with your head elevated
  • Taking pain medication according to Dr. Ingram’s instructions
  • Using ice to soothe the swelling

The transformation doesn’t end with the recovery phase. The impact of a Facelift is great on your life and self-confidence. With your youthful appearance restored, you’ll discover newfound confidence in embracing life’s adventures and milestones.

Dr. Ingram helps you schedule follow-up visits so he can check on your progress with healing in the weeks following your Facelift surgery. If you get other surgeries, he plans your treatments strategically to minimize your discomfort and healing time.
