What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a surgical solution designed to reinvigorate your abdomen’s appearance by enhancing muscle definition, reducing excess belly fat below, and tightening the skin. Oftentimes, when patients have undergone significant weight loss, whether it’s due to dieting or multiple pregnancies, their abdominal core loses its skin elasticity and they develop weakened abdominal muscles. Dr. Ingram and his team are able to tighten and trim any hanging skin, remove excess fat, and provide you with a flatter stomach.

We customize our approach for each patient, aiming to boost your self-confidence along with providing you with enhanced body contours.

Please keep in mind that a Tummy Tuck is NOT a weight loss solution, but a way to improve the appearance of your abdomen by eliminating sagging skin and tightening your core.

Mini-Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck refers to removing some loose skin in the lower abdomen without incising around the belly button or tightening the muscles above the belly button. A mini tummy tuck is used sparingly, for those patients who just barely have a protruding tummy, having a tiny amount of excess fat or skin that can’t be lost with just diet and exercise.

The first step in getting a Tummy Tuck in Nashville, TN is to contact Ingram Cosmetic Surgery. When you come in for your consultation, you will be able to meet with Dr. Alton Ingram and discuss what you’re looking to achieve from the procedure. He will also be able to answer any questions that you may have, give you an examination of your stomach and body type, and ask you questions about your medical history.

You should be very open and honest when talking about your medical history as this will help Dr. Ingram determine if you’re a good candidate for a tummy tuck and make the safest decisions when creating your surgical and treatment plan.

Once your plan has been made and you agree with it, then you will meet with our Patient Coordinator who will help you select your surgical date. You will also be given a list of instructions that will help give you a more optimal surgical experience.

What to Expect on the Day of Tummy Tuck Surgery

When you come in for your Tummy Tuck, it will begin with you being administered some anesthesia in the form of general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, depending on what is discussed during your consultation. When you are fully sedated, Dr. Ingram will begin making his strategic incisions.

A full tummy tuck utilizes a horizontally oriented incision placed between the pubic hairline and the belly button. The shape and length of the incisions are determined by the amount of excess skin. After full tummy tucks, the abdominal skin is lifted and the weaker, underlying abdominal muscles are repaired. If necessary, Dr. Ingram will make a second incision around your naval to remove the excess skin in your upper abdomen.

The upper abdominal skin is pulled down and any excess skin is trimmed. The remaining skin is sutured together and a new opening for the belly button is created. to remove excess skin Dr. Ingram will pop the belly button up through the surface and suture it into position. Finally, the incision is closed with sutures, skin adhesives, tapes, or clips.

This procedure will take approximately two to three hours.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

Typically, patients require one to two weeks off work to recover from an abdominoplasty surgery you won’t be able to lift, push, or pull anything heavy for about a month because of the muscle tightening that we perform in almost every tummy tuck. And you won’t see your absolute final recovery for at least three months, during which time swelling and bruising may occur. Dr. Ingram guides managing these symptoms and facilitates smooth recovery through frequent follow-up appointments.

Post-surgery recovery varies among individuals, depending on factors like age, health, body weight, and the type of tummy tuck performed. Patients typically need to wear an abdominal binder for about four to six weeks as their body heals to avoid fluid buildup and support the abdomen. It’s necessary to avoid strenuous activity, including vigorous exercise or heavy lifting, for at least six weeks. Additionally, patients are instructed on how to care for incisions and drain tubes, how to recognize signs of infection, and which physical activities to avoid.
